All formulations contain excipients making the interaction between API and excipients crucial in many aspects. For example, an excipient may affect the degradation rate and/or mechanism of the API.  Additionally, excipients can significantly alter API dissolution.  Excipients can also cause the API to change its solid state nature by forming a co-crystal or causing an API salt to disproportionate.
